The ELIZA effect describes a familiar human habit: when a system produces fluent, responsive language, we begin to treat it as though there is a mind behind the words. We may start to infer understanding, sympathy, memory, or judgement even when the program is only following patterns and producing plausible text.
In other words, the effect is not really about the machine becoming human. It is about people becoming socially responsive to the machine.
Why ELIZA triggered it so effectively
ELIZA used a deceptively simple technique. It looked for recognisable phrases, reflected parts of the user’s wording back at them, and asked open-ended questions. Because the DOCTOR script sounded calm, reflective, and slightly therapeutic, its limitations were often interpreted as sensitivity rather than shallowness.
